A Beginner's Guide to the Wonders of the Spine

Last updated 6 years ago

Most people don’t start thinking about their spines until it starts causing them pain or discomfort, when they have to call in a pain management doctor. Your spine plays a crucial role in every move you make, and understanding how it functions may help you prevent back injuries in the future. Here is what you need to know about the amazing abilities of your spine:

Spine Structure

Your spine runs from your neck down to your pelvis. It is made up of 24 vertebrae, or bones, each of which is separated by a disc that absorbs shock as you move. The discs and vertebrae are attached by ligaments. Tendons bind muscles to your spine.

The spine is divided into five sections: cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacrum, and coccyx. It is loosely shaped like an “S,” with the thoracic section curving outward from the cervical section and back inward at the lumbar section.

Spine Functions

The spine’s main job is to protect your spinal cord. It also helps distribute your weight so you can walk and stand comfortably without putting too much pressure on any one part of your body. The spine allows you to bend, flex, rotate, and stiffen, and provides structural support for your shoulders, neck, and head. The bones in the spine also produce red blood cells and store minerals for your body.

Spine Problems

As you age, some degree of wear and tear on your spine is normal. Sometimes, this wearing of the spine can cause back pain. Problems with the discs that cushion the vertebrae are one of the most common causes of back pain, but injury, spinal diseases such as scoliosis, and other conditions can lead to back pain that requires treatment.
