Taking a Closer Look at Myofascial Pain Syndrome

Last updated 6 years ago

Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is a common cause of chronic pain. With this condition, the muscles become inflamed, leading to tenderness and aches in the affected areas. MPS frequently sends patients to pain management doctors, who can provide treatments that will alleviate the symptoms of this condition.

What is MPS?

MPS is a condition that involves the muscles’ connective tissues, or the fascia. When the fascia becomes inflamed, it causes aching and tenderness in the soft tissue. Sometimes, MPS is limited to a single muscle, while it affects entire groups of muscles in other cases. MPS is chronic, which means it is an ongoing condition that likely won’t clear up without treatment.

Patients with MPS experience pain at the affected muscle site. They may also experience fatigue and depression because of the stress of the pain.

What Causes MPS?

There are a number of things that could trigger MPS, from injury to lack of activity. Often, the muscles that are tender and painful are not the muscles that surround the actual trigger site of MPS. For instance, an injury in one muscle can set off a chain reaction that actually triggers pain in a different location.

There are four kinds of MPS trigger points: active, latent, secondary, and satellite. Pain management doctors identify these trigger points by applying pressure to different muscles and noting where and if pain occurs.

How is MPS Treated?

Treatment for MPS depends on the location and severity of the pain. Physical therapy, massage therapy, muscle stretching, and pain-relieving injections may all be used. Pain management doctors usually use a combination of methods for the best results. Doctors may also prescribe medications to treat the conditions that accompany MPS, such as depression and insomnia.
