Causes of Tension Headaches

Last updated 4 years ago

Pain specialists often see patients with tension headaches. If you have one, you’ll experience a sensation of tightness around your head. While more research is needed regarding its exact cause, it is believed that for some people, tension headaches are the result of tightened muscles located in the scalp and neck. Some contributing factors to this muscle tightening can include anxiety, fatigue, hunger, and stress. Poor posture, overexertion, and insufficient rest are other possible factors.

Another theory regarding the cause of tension headaches is that it involves the malfunctioning of the nerve pathways of the brain. The pain receptors become overactive, causing an increased sensitivity to pain. Furthermore, certain people are at an elevated risk of tension headaches. You may be more likely to experience them if you’re a woman and you’re in your 40’s.

A pain specialist can help you control your tension headaches. Schedule an appointment with Pain Specialists of Orange County by calling (888) 699-1334 or visit our website for more information. We offer three convenient locations in Laguna Hills, Mission Viejo, and Irvine.
